Details

This A-Frame design is practical, cost effective, and quick to build. It uses standard wood framing construction with dimensional lumber available at local hardware stores. The A-frame contains all EnergySTAR appliances, a cold climate air source heat pump, an electric water heater, and WaterSense plumbing fixtures. The roof walls are constructed with 2 x 10's to accommodate R-30 insulation. The A-frame can provide sufficient solar generation at any orientation and passive heating benefits at up to 30° from South or North. South orientation is optimal to maximize passive solar, with PV panels on both east and West roofs to capture sunlight throughout the day.

Additional Sustainability and Resilience Features

  • Long-lasting metal roof that is fire-resistant, non-toxic, excellent for rainwater harvesting, and can be recycled at the end of its life.
  • Elevated platform for resilience to floods and large snow events
  • Roofline that easily sheds rain and snow and can withstand extreme weather events.
  • Abundant natural light and a wood stove for backup heat to help occupants keep costs low and better weather power outages.
  • Fully shielded, amber-LED exterior lights preserve dark skies.

The equilateral triangle nods to Flagstaff's mountainous landscape, and its sturdy simplicity will withstand the test of time, both physically and aesthetically.
